Miami Seaquarium is the home of Flipper, Lolita & Salty!

The Miami Seaquarium is definitely worth your visit. Here, you will see dolphins, sea lions, fish and of course “Lolita” the Killer Whale. If you’ve ever been to Sea World then you might not be impressed. But Sea World is over the top if you ask me. Anyway, we think that going to the Seaquarium is a great way to spend a day.

The Killer Whale and Pacific White-sided Dolphin show is spectacular. On a hot day it is fun to go in your bathing suit and try to get splashed by Lolita (brrrrr!). Meet “Salty” the Sea Lion & his Harbor Seal co-star at the Golden Dome. Also, TV’s Flipper is ready to make your acquaintance & entertain you at his show in the lagoon (which served as the set for the movie!). Check out the Top Deck Dolphin show where you can see the dolphins up close. They’ll come up and try to talk to you before the show and you are just a few feet away. Make sure you are looking at the walls as you go – they are a beautiful aquarium filled with Atlantic & Caribbean fish.

Sharks, Manatees, Tropical Fish & Reefs, Crocodiles, Alligators and much more all await your audience. For the adventurous, you can touch, feed & even swim with the dolphins in the Dolphin Encounter Program!

If you reside in South Florida then make sure that you go in February. The Seaquarium usually runs a special in that month where you can pay the price of admission for one day and get a pass for the rest of the year.

Experience the beauty of this well preserved estate of James Deering. The buildings go back to the mid 1800's and the lands tell stories of life before the "domestication" of southern Florida.

The Deering Estate at Cutler consists of 444 acres. There are two historic homes located on this estate. The first is “Richmond Cottage” which was built of dense Dade County Pine in the mid 1800′s. Originally, it was the first hotel between Coconut Grove & Key West. As the train tracks were built further west in the early 1900′s, this little, yet thriving town quickly became abandoned. It was bought by James Deering in 1915, as his winter home. The Richmond Cottage was where the Deerings entertained & conveniently, where the kitchen was located. The second is “The Stone House” which Deering had specially built to resemble the architecture of his endeared Barcelona, Spain. This was the main living quarters for the Deerings. It also housed a great art collection. In order to best keep the collection in tact, Mr. Deering elected to not have a kitchen built into this house.

Two Tours – free with admission:
1. Historic House Tour: Guided tour of Richmond Cottage, & the Stone House on Biscayne Bay.
2. Natural Areas Tour: 1 1/2 mile trek through lush forest & tropical hardwood trees on the footpath that would become the first Cutler Road/Ingram Highway.

Come and soak in the breathtaking beauty of the estate’s outdoors! There are several “EcoAdventures” offered at the Deering Estate: Eco-Bike Tour, Kayak Rentals, Chicken Key Canoe Tour, Moonlight Canoe Tour, and a Bay Cruise.

Today, 1,100 tropical birds & 2,000 varieties of plants and flowers are showcased on the island.
