Inspired by a thwarted love, Ed Leedskalnin from Latvia single-handedly constructed what is now known as Coral Castle, as a monument for his young love. This castle was a fantasy world for Ed, where he had hopes of his love coming to take her place as queen one day. He made his living by giving tours of his masterpiece.
The coral walls weigh approximately 125 lbs. per cubic foot. Their dimentions are 8 feet tall, 4 feet wide and 3 feet thick! The castle includes a rock garden, each piece holding great significance.
The exact methods he used to contruct this monument are still a mystery to this day. Ed worked alone and at night, as he was a very private person. He used only the combination of his hands, basic hand tools & the laws of weight & leverage, to complete this wonder in the course of 28 years.
The construction of site has stumped experts in scientific & scholarly fields alike. How was it possible for a single (& relatively small) man to move & carve more than 1,100 tons of rock without assistance?
